ArtLab at the Future of Paleography Conference
ArtLab members Sjors Nab, Christien Schrover, and Sanne Frequin participated in the Future of Paleography conference at Utrecht University, where they showcased innovative imaging techniques that enhance the readability of damaged or obscured text.
During the conference, we demonstrated three powerful methods: Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), Photogrammetry, and Multispectral Imaging. These techniques reveal inscriptions and surface details that are often invisible to the naked eye.
Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about our recent projects, including:
-
A photogrammetric reconstruction of a 16th-century inscription in the Church of Mastenbroek,
-
The analysis of a 7th-century manuscript fragment containing a palimpsest, using Multispectral Imaging in combination with Principal Component Analysis (PCA),
-
And the examination of 17th-century woodblocks using our custom-built RTI dome.
The event was a wonderful showcase of how low-cost imaging techniques can yield spectacular results. It provided a valuable platform for sharing interdisciplinary approaches to paleography and sparked exciting conversations about the future of historical text analysis.
