This workshop is dedicated to the life and legacy of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), the pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and scientific illustrator whose work continues to inspire scholars across disciplines.

Filmmaker Pim Zwier recently produced a thought-provoking film about Merian, developed in close collaboration with several Utrecht University researchers. Taking this project as our starting point, we are organizing an event to delve into Merian’s remarkable career and explore her enduring relevance for art, science, and visual culture today. We will discuss the film, view the Univeristy Library collection of Merians books and engage with her techniques at the ArtLab.
